my boyfriend hit me for the first time last week

19/02/2009 : my boyfriend hit me for the first time last week and resulted in me having two black eyes and a busted nose. he cried and wouldint eat for two days and he couldint understand why he done it, neither did i as he never came across as a voilent person. he admits that what he done was wrong and is determined to start anger management counselling to prevent him from hiting me again, i need advice should i forgive him and stand by him through the counselling or should i leave because he will do it again as the counselling will not work?
