Should I give him time?

07/09/2011 : I am in love with a man who recently split from his wife. He says he is heartbroken over the loss of his family and will not be able to trust someone again for a long time. He also declares to love and adore me, but I have strong doubts about it. We originally started off as an affair with no commitment on either side, but have been seeing each other approx. once or twice a week, with many affectionate text messages thrown in between. However, there have also been up to four weeks when we didn't see each other, and the messages now seem to get scarcer.
Basically, he will respond to mine, but not take the initiative himself. Is it normal that - in more than six months - he has never proposed any plans for a weekend? He has his daughter with him every other weekend and only ped by spontaneously twice or thrice after delivering her to his wife. Is it normal that he never plans ahead when we can see each other? Is there any hope it is just very early for him, but he really loves me and I should give him more time? Or am I simply the rebound from his marriage and should not really hope for anything else?
