How old before I can leave my child?

My son is 8 years old. He is quite good at looking after himself. I am single Mum. How old does he have to be befor I can leave him on his own and go out and have some fun? I have not been put for years and I think I am going mad.

replies: Well I think you probably have another six years before you can rest easy here. We understand that 14 is an 'accepted' reasonable age that children may be left on their own. Until then you really need someone to be with the child ... an eight year old is still very much a child, certainly in law. Agreed you need some time out, but not at the expense of leaving an eight year old home alone. There must be other parents or sympathetic older teenagers who can do this minding for you. Perhaps another mother with whom you can alternate? It's just a question of asking around.
