Spelling Advice

My son has just started at middle scjool this year. I am a single Mum. He is getting quite hard homework now which he is struggling with. The thing is I cant help him because i cant spell. I dont have the money for coaching what can I do? It took me an hour to write this please help I dont want my son to think I am stupid.

I had a good grammar school education and spelling came naturally but as I get older, I have to look up so many words that simply baffle me as to the correct spelling. You can re-educate yourself to some degree ... use a word processor with a spell check and let it point out every mispelling .. also, for single words, you can always Google them ,,, I do it all the time!

replies: My heart goes out to you here! You have to accept that you cannot change this situation overnight. I would suggest that you make an appointment to see his teacher ( does he have a form teacher or someone who has overall responsibility for him? ) and put the problem quietly and slowly to him or her and ask for advice and if any additional tuition is available. Do you have friends or neighbours who you could confide in and ask for some of their own experience in helping their son? And why not see if any courses are available for you to take in adult education english and maths courses to build up your own confidence here. You could source that information by probably starting at your son's own school. I sincerely believe that you should never be afraid to ask for help when you need it. People surprisingly are often keen to help under such circumstances. Good luck ...
